Introduction Guide to ILS Labs

If this is your first time in the ILS Labs as a researcher, what are the things you should do before you can start using the research facilities?

Check the facilities page to get an impression of the facilities you may want to use.

There is a lot of useful information in the how-tos. We highly recommend looking at the overview.

Introduce yourself to Maarten Duijndam, Michael Villeneuve, Ty Mees and Ben Bonfil in Janskerkhof 13A room 0.09 (on the ground floor). Furthermore:

  • If you are going to do eye-tracking, also introduce yourself to Iris Mulders (phone for an appointment).
  • If you are going to do EEG or other biosignals, also introduce yourself to Marijn Struiksma (email for an appointment).
  • If you are going to do experiments involving infants or small children, introduce yourself to Desiree Capel (email or phone for an appointment).
You cannot use the facilities if we don’t know you.
Tell us about your research and the experiments you will be doing. We will help you in your preparation, as well as give you access to the facilities you need.

To work in the lab, you will need up to three different accounts:

  1. Your Solis ID will need to be made a member of the ILS Labs users group to enable you to log in on the lab PCs and use the data server:
    • To be able to log in on the lab computers and access the storage systems, please fill out this form to request being added to the ILS Labs users group. NB: if you are a student in the RMA Linguistics programme, this has probably already been done for you at the start of your first year; check if you can log in on a PC in K.06 in the basement to make sure.
    • If you will be collaborating with other people (e.g. your supervisor), know that we provide project folders; network drives on which you can share project files with other members of that folder. We will arrange for a project folder to be created, or add you to an existing one. You can request (access to) a project folder using this form.
    • Read about the folder structure of the lab storage in the how-to Storing your (Research) Data.
  2. In order to use the lab or equipment, you will need to make a reservation in the  reservation system. Please register for the reservation system here. (Note that reservations for K.03A and K.11 are done through the babylab system; contact Desiree Capelfor more information if you need to reserve these rooms).
  3. Participant recruitment:
    • For infant experiments, you need to contact Desiree Capel.
    • If you plan on recruiting adult participants using the ILS adult participant database, read the how-to Recruiting adult participants carefully, at least a week before you want to start running your experiment.

You are expected to uphold the house rules at all times. If you do not, you may be denied access to the facilities.

Please read and understand the house rules.

Read the how-to Planning an Experiment.

If you want to run an experiment, it is a good idea to have an understanding of all the things you will need to do before you start.
This how-to provides a step-by-step guide. We advise to read it thoroughly before you start anything. Of course, if you are uncertain in a later stage of the process, you can always refer back to it.

Once your ZEP experiment is ready, you’ll need to know how to properly run your ZEP experiment in the lab.

The current coronavirus protocol for the lab can be found here.
